There is so much buzz and rumours on the next iPhone, i.e. iPhone 4G which people say is slated to get launched in June/July 2010 but we are yet to hear confirmed news on that.

iPhone 4G

There is so much buzz and rumours on the next iPhone, i.e. iPhone 4G which people say is slated to get launched in June/July 2010 but we are yet to hear confirmed news on that.

Still with clue of the recently found iPhone in a train, the speculation and analysis of the new set has already created buzz amongst the Apple enthusiasts globally.

We will wait again when Steve Jobs launch it sometime in mid 2010. With the available info around the web, the below could be the feature highlights coming in iPhone 4G, check this with the courtesy of Gizmodo:

What’s new in iPhone 4g

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

Watch this iPhone 4g Video

Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that aims at making machines or software programs that exhibit intelligent behavior like human beings.

Artificial Intelligence in a nutshell

Ever tried the voice recognition feature in your mobile or computer? Most of us have!! And I am sure most of you were amused to see how a machine could recognize the language we speak. All this is possible due to Artificial Intelligence and this is a small speck of the enormous potential AI and its application hold with in.

Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that aims at making machines or software programs that exhibit intelligent behavior like human beings i.e. a machine can perceive their surroundings, analyze and react in the best possible way. The AI involves various other fields like Cognitive Science, Mathematical Logic, computational science to name a few.

The history of artificial intelligence can be traced to 1950 when Alan Turing proposed the Turing test as a measure of machine intelligence. The Turing test Prof. John McCarthy coined the term Artificial Intelligence at the conference on the campus of Dartmouth College in summer of 1956.Over the time AI has been divided into:

Strong AI : Strong AI (Very often called as ‘true AI’) refers to AI that inculcates intelligence in the machine that matches or exceeds human intelligence. This has still not come in to existence but finds a place in many of the sci-fi movies like Matrix, Terminator etc.

Weak AI : Weak AI refers to AI that enables machines to only mimic humans based on their programming. This kind of AI just simulates the human thoughts and actions that they are programmed to. AI. The true AI features like independent reasoning, to learn freely and adapt are absent. All current form of AI is weak.

There are many areas in which weak AI already inhabits today’s world and in many cases we don’t even realize that we use Artificial Intelligence. Lets see some of such applications:

The self-parking technology in cars is based on AI.

AI is used in monitoring frauds in Banks.

The voice recognition in mobile phones was made possible using AI.

The intelligent homes comprising of temperature, passive infrared, electricity and light sensors are AI based.

Unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous submersibles, unmanned surveillance in shallow water used in Military also involve AI.

The Computer chess built on AI defeated the world Champion Garry Kasparov in a game.

The dream of making machines that are ‘Truly AI’ does not seem impossible. Companies like Google are aiming at making search engine fully artificially intelligent. In future we will have a search engine that will not be based on ‘just the words we type in without the search engine understanding the meaning’, instead it will exactly understand what we want.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a pioneer ‘cloud computing’ based company providing different kinds of remote computing services over the web.

Rightly they say “The future is cloud” … and now we are seeing that everyone is using someway part or full of “Cloud Computing”. As you can find the detailed reading on Cloud Computing in another post, hence I am trying to give some more thoughts around one of the vendor service offerings on Cloud Computing from Amazon. They have bundled their cloud computing services under ‘Amazon Web Services’ (AWS).

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a pioneer ‘cloud computing’ based company providing different kinds of remote computing services over the web. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Simple Storage service (S3), Amazon SimpleDB, Amazon CloudFront, Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS), Amazon Elastic MapReduce are to name few of them. Let’s have a quick overview on what these services are all about:

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2):

It provides resizable computing resources, all available in the cloud. By subscribing to Elastic Compute Cloud a user can create a virtual machine (an instance), which is nothing but an outline of a machine.

You can configure the instance based on the Operating system, applications, libraries, data, security and network access, etc you want to use.

The advantages:

Elastic: The capacity of the server instance can be increased or decreased with in no time and you have the liberty to create as many instances as you want at the same time.

Complete Control: You will have root access of the instances and have full control over it.

Secure and Reliable: This service runs on a highly reliable and secured computing environment. Web Service interfaces are available to configure firewall settings.

Economical: In line with advantages of cloud computing, for EC2 also you pay for only what you use and the kind of instance you create.

The Pricing:

The pricing depends on the time of usage and the kind of instance created. Let’s see how:

On-Demand Instance: The pricing for this instance is based on per instance-hour consumed, starting from the time when instance is launched until it is terminated.

Reserved Instances: Reserved Instances can be purchased for the period of 1-3 years and pay a non-refundable fee only once. You get a discount on the usage charge i.e. the rate applicable when the instance is running.

Spot Instances: Spot instances are the unused EC2 capacity whose charge is decided on the supply of and demand for Spot Instances.

The cloud computing area is still under the evolution and the changing scenario is very dynamic, so watch out for the happenings around this. I will keep you posted on that, so keep updating!

Apple iPad tablet launched to change the world of gadgets

Steve Jobs is in news and so is Apple Inc… Yes, you guessed it right, we are talking about Apple’s much awaited and much hyped iPad tablet that has been launched with an amazing price range. Apple iPad is expected to revolutionize how people read newspapers, magazines, books and even how they watch television.

Besides creating an upheaval in the gadget market, Apple’s share prices showed an upward trend. So, after iPhone and the Macbook, it is iPad tablet that is the buzzing phrase and is being considered as the third category gadget. The aim of Apple Inc is to put iPad tablet into the hands of the masses.

Let me make one thing clear and that is iPad is not a mere replacement of iPod Touch or iPhone and it is also not a device away from laptop. This iPad sits right in the middle and is not for making phone calls and it has no mouse or keyboard, but it provides with excellent web browsing experience. The iPad users will be able to send email, read e-books, create albums and enjoy videos and all that at an affordable price.

The iPad is definitely lighter and thinner than any netbook or laptop as it is just half-inch thick and weighing not more than 1.5 pounds. One can work with this device both in landscape and portrait mode. The users of iPad can definitely download to read the latest novel and book e-ticket for the forthcoming movies, but it cannot make a phone call or click a photo at least for some time now.

The first generation of Apple iPad will be available in the market by the end of March 2010. The 16 GB model is priced at $499 while 32 GB and 64 GB will be available at $599 and $699 respectively.

There are two versions of iPad. One that is available with Wi-Fi and the other supports both Wi-Fi and 3G.

Wall Street Journal says, “Apple focused on the role the gadget could play in homes and in classrooms,” the WSJ reported, envisioning “that the tablet can be shared by multiple family members to read news and check email in homes.”.

Experts put their comments about the gadget in their own way:

• TechCrunch — MG Siegler provides pictures of the tablet that are so realistic-looking that they might even be pictures of the tablet. There’s also a commercial floating around this morning created by someone looking for a job. Eyeballs beware today.

• Circuit Breaker (CNET) — Erica Ogg collates rumors about iPod-like docking connections, 3G connections, and publisher connections. (Yes, yes, and yes, in case you’re in a rush.)

• Gizmodo — Dan Nosowitz adds that iPhone apps will likely port to the tablet easily.

• TechCrunch — Like a Barnes & Noble bookstore app, maybe? Maybe.

• Boy Genius Report — Speaking of 3G rumors, Verizon apparently has told its employees to expect big news Wednesday. Of course, that could merely be an ancillary rumor about iPhones appearing on other networks soon. Silly, forgotten iPhones… don’t confuse matters!

• TUAW — The tablet has already been tasked with saving the entertainment industry as well as publishing, but did you know it’ll also resuscitate education in America? There’s an app for that, apparently. Michael Grothaus wonders if we’ll see a tablet on every desk soon.

• ReadWriteWeb — Of course, that will come after it’s done reducing health care costs and improving quality, according to Mike Kirkwood. Don’t get pushy, kids… the tablet will heal all!

With lots of promises and expectations, we will have to wait and watch to what level the Apple iPad can meet this. I will keep you posted on this !

After smartphones, it’s Smartbooks now.

Smartbook is a mobile device that is a fusion of a smarphone and a netbook, they are the netbooks with the connectivity and battery life of a smartphone.

Though there aren’t much details available on its exact tech specs, let’s try to find out the features that makes it smart:

Instant-on access: When switched on, the device turns on instantly, much like smartphones.

3-g connectivity: You can enjoy mobile broadband speed provided by your network carrier.

Battery life – Week long standby and 8-10 hours charge

Built-in GPS – Helps you in locating places and directions.

CPU Configuration: A 1 GHz CPU and 600 MHz DSP

Screen Resolution : A high definition WXGA( 1280 x 768)

The OS is anticipated to be a Linux-based Instant-On operating system.

It will possess a display having a size of somewhere in 10-12 inch (diagonally) range.

It will come with a QWERTY keyboard.

The Tech giant, Lenovo will be the first one to launch a smartbook powered with a ARM (Advanced Risc Machines) based chip called Snapdragon, manufactured by Qualcomm.

AT&T has tied up with Lenovo taking up the role of distributor and they use a chip called snapdragon manufactured by ARM (Advanced Risc Machines). The first Smartbook will be seen in market in JAN 2010.

Pegatron, an Asus copany, is working towards their Smartbooks using Freescale ARM Cortex- A8 processor and 512 MB DDR2 RAM, 1024 X 600 LCD screen.

Acer also has joined the race of Smartbooks and is expected to come up with one of it’s very soon. The price tags are predicted to be around $200.

As we see days nearing for Smartbook’s launch, it would be interesting to see how well this concept seeps into consumers.

Google Voice..Its telecommunication, that Google has been experimenting with in recent pasts.

Google Voice: An internet based telecommunication service

Its telecommunication, that Google has been experimenting with in recent pasts. Google voice is a service or application that integrates all your phone no.s into one and takes away the worries of managing many contact no.s. Originally, it was GrandCentral, who started the service but Google acquired GrandCentral in 2007 and re-launched the service on 11th March 2009 with the name Google Voice.

This service is available as invite only. When you sign up for Google Voice first time you can choose between your any of the present numbers and a new Google number as the single point of contact. The calls coming on this no. are forwarded to other phone numbers that user configures while signing up. Depending upon the caller group, calling time and calling number you can decide which number should ring when.

With this as the basic feature let’s have a look at what else Google voice has to offer us:

It offers free calls and SMS in US and Canada

International calls are US $ 0.02 per minute. Can it get cheaper than this?

Call Screening :

You can divert calls directly to voicemail box.

Notification or announcement of callers based on their numbers.

Blocking calls from specified numbers and automated identification for blocked numbers.

You can record your calls and archive it online.

Voicemail transcripts: You can view your voicemails as messages online or you can listen to them on any of the phone numbers.

Voicemail messages are notified through SMS and e-mail.

Voicemails can be forwarded and downloaded also.

Based on the calling number we can set personalized greetings for the caller.

It also provides the facility of conference calls.

While a call is in progress you can switch phones without disrupting the call.

Caller’s id is also forwarded along with the incoming call to your various phones.

When you make a call, you need to make it through the Google Voice service by calling Google Voice no. and using menu choices or by using the web-based portal to place a call.

This unique concept of centralized number is only available in US as of now but Google has given indications about launching it in other countries as well.

Microsoft, as an answer to Google Voice is planning to launch Bing Ring in January 2010 in a limited beta version.

Keep reading to know more about Bing Ring….

SPDY: Protocol that will make web 2 times faster.

Its Google again, all set to make the web at least 2 times faster. SPDY (pronounced as SPeeDY) is the research project that it has taken up to make this happen. As Google puts it “SPDY is an application layer protocol for transporting content over the web, designed specifically for minimum latency.” In simple terms, it aims at making the interaction between browser and server faster.

It creates a session between the HTTP application layer and the TCP transport layer, above SSL (Secured Socket layer) and uses several techniques to make the interaction between browser and server faster:

Multiplexed Streams: It permits multiple and concurrent streams over a single TCP connection, unlike HTTP. Streams are bi-directional flow of bytes across a virtual channel with in a SPDY session.

Request Prioritization: Using this technique a client can request as many items as it wants from the server and assign a priority to each request.

HTTP Header compression: SPDY compresses request and response header, which results in fewer packets and fewer bytes to be transmitted.

A major enhancement to HTTP is server initiated streams, which is not found in HTTP. Server initiated streams enables the server to transfer content to the client, even when client does not make a request. This is done in two ways:

Server Push: Server pushes data to client via the X – Associated – Content header. This header informs the client that server is sending the information to the client before the client asked for it. This will remarkably increase the initial – page download speed.

Server Hint: Using X – Subresources header, server suggests the client that it should ask for certain resource. Server will wait to send the resource until the client asks for resource.

So far Google has developed a prototype SPDY enabled Google chrome browser and an open source web-server. After conducting a test by downloading top 25 web sites 10 times, it was found that the download speed increased by (up to) 55%. The browser and the web server have to be upgraded, where as no changes are required in web pages.

After testing under lab conditions, Google has a major task to make it work in real-life condition and make it compatible with other browsers like internet explorer, Firefox.
