Nomophobia the new Mania !

Is the network coverage not there or is it that the mobile is out of charge? This is the panic that keeps gripping each individual in this tech savvy 21st century. Earlier, the stress was to get a job, to get married or to reach one’s workplace in time or even anxiety of a broken home. But in this cutting edge technology driven frantic pace of life, have redefined stress and anxiety. Today, it is most closely associated with the fear of being out of contact. This affliction has been given a new name and is known as nomophobia as millions of people suffer from no mobile phobia and hence the term is coined.

People today are wedded with the mobile phone and the reason that they give is to be in touch with their family and friends constantly. Losing mobile contact with children, parents, colleagues and even customers can be worrying and stressful experience for many. But is it only this or there is some emotional stress behind the veil of being in touch constantly. There are people who do not switch off their mobile phones.. The question is why? Experts believe that if the mobile phone stops working, the mobile addicts feel restless and they feel insecure, as if they are being cut off from this rat race and being panicky is a 24/7 culture for these kinds of people.

But if you are one and are stressful if your mobile is out of charge or credit, then you are not alone. The mania is catching up and to avoid nomophobia keep your mobile credits topped up and ensure that you carry your charger wherever you go such that it does not run out of battery. You can also carry a pre-paid phonecard to make emergency calls if your mobile is lost, stolen or broken. Additionally, keep the contact numbers of your immediate family members in record, as your handset might get lost or stolen.

Above all, try keeping your mobile phone switched off for some time so that you can liberate yourself from the shackles of nomophobia.

Light peak: Gen-X of high speed connectivity

On 23rd Sept 2009, Intel, in its Intel Developer Forum (IDF) unveiled a new high speed optical cable technology devised to connect electronic devices to each other, the technology being code named as ‘Light Peak’. Bundles of copper wires to connect your computer to peripherals, disk drives, displays, workstations etc will soon be a matter of past. Let’s find out:

Why is Light Peak necessary?

As of now we only use electrical cable technology in most of the computing devices, but due to electro-magnetic interference and various other issues this technology is reaching its limits in terms of speed and length. This limiting factor (EMI) is overcome with the use of optical fibres, which uses light to transfer data instead of electricity.

Technology Behind Light Peak:

From the little that has been revealed about the technology: All the devices and platforms supporting light peak will consist of a controller chip and an optical module. The optical module, using miniature lasers and photo detectors, converts electricity to light and vice versa.

Why is Light Peak considered as a revolution in device connectivity?

Its bandwidth start with 10 Gbps and can be scaled up to 100 Gbps

It can run multiple protocols simultaneously over one cable. This feature makes it possible to connect multiple devices through one port.

It provides thinner, longer and more flexible cables.

Intel is working on bundling the optical cables with copper wires so that Light Peak can be used to power devices plugged into PC.

In near future, it is seen as a replacement to USB, Firewire and HDMI.

Light Peak in is expected to make its way to the market by 2010. Its pricing is still to be decided. There still exists a massive task to standardize this method of device communication and to have ports in devices that support this technology.

Light peak is going to redefine the way we connect to devices, definitely until Intel comes up with something solid from the research it has taken up on Ultra Wideband Technology (UWB) that will enable wireless communication between various devices.

More to come on this technology area … keep reading & commenting!

We have heard enough of Web 2.0 and with it the various sorts of terminologies like Blogs, Wikis, RIA and obviously Mashups.

Though I covered Mashups in detail is one of my earlier posts, but I cant resist to share with you all the power and level where we can now see the Live Mashups in action.

WiMax Technology

WiMax Technology

WiMax (Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access) is the latest technology which enables high speed and reliable internet access anywhere and everywhere. It is seen as the alternative to DSL, Cable modem, T1, T3 lines Wi-Fi, and dial up connection. To understand more about it lets discuss:

Why is it important to have a WiMax?

It overcomes the problem of small coverage area and high cost associated with Wi-Fi and broadband. It comes with high speed of broadband, ‘Wirelessness’ of Wi-Fi and broad coverage area like a cell phone network.

Keeping in mind the increasing demand and use of high bandwidth application, WiMax is seen as the only solution that is 3-5 times faster and 5 times more cost effective than present 3G technologies.

WiMax is going to make ‘Internet on the go’ a reality, a scenario where you can just connect a device, connectable to internet and enabled with WiMax(Like Wi-Fi), anywhere. You can experience connectivity to its max, which is going to become on of the basic necessities in near future (very similar to mobile phones today).

How WiMax works?

The operation of WiMax is quite similar to Wi-Fi but at a higher speed and encompassing a large coverage area.

A WiMax system is composed of two parts:

A WiMax tower: Providing a coverage area of around 3000 sq. miles ( 8000 km2)

A WiMax receiver: The receiver and antenna can be a PCMCIA card small box, a laptop or any device built-in with WiMax.

A WiMax tower and receiver communicate via radio signals and a device equipped with WiMax would receive encrypted data keys to prevent any unauthorized access. This communication is done in two ways:

The Non-line-of-sight way: Using this we can connect an antenna on a computer directly to the transmitting tower but it uses a lower frequency range of 2 GHz to 11 GHz.

The line-of-sight service: A dish antenna from a rooftop or pole points and connects straight to WiMax tower. This uses a higher frequency of around 66 GHz with very less interference and more bandwidth.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) provides efficient support for many users using the service simultaneously.

To support a huge data traffic WiMax uses multiple, Multiple Input/Multiple Output(MIMO) smart antenna.

This 4G wireless technology, built on IEEE 802.16e-2005 air interface standard, provides:

high data transfer rates

Low cost

Based on all-IP network architecture, it is more scalable and efficient network for video, voice and data (This is called Quality of Service).

Reduced Network complexity

Backward compatibility with existing 2G and 3G cellular network deployment, making it easier to deploy WiMax.

Holds equally good for fixed environment very similar to DSL or cable modem service.

With Giants like Intel and service provider, Clear coming into play, it is definitely going to revolutionize the broadband access like cell phones did it for phone access.

Synchronize with Syncplicity or Live Mesh

To bring your digital thought under one roof there is a continuous product innovation in the form of high-end laptops to iphones, while to sync and update your digital world and all the information that is important and all that you least cared for can now be accessed from anywhere anytime-check out on Syncplicity and Live mesh.

Gone are the days when you will need a file back up, when you increasingly run the risk of forgetting to copying them to the USB drives on your way down the presentation hall or the feeling of annoyance as you fail to attach the file to your email.

These are the myriad reasons why software programs like Syncplicity, Live Mesh is created and make Foldershare a passé.

What does Syncplicity or Live Mesh do?

They have finally put an end to downloading, burning, emailing and copying. Syncplicity can keep all your files in-sync and up-to-date across all computers without compromising on the security features. Similarly, Microsoft Window’s Live Mesh helps you connect to another computer and gives access to other’s desktop as if you are working sitting right infront of it.

How to go about it?

In Live Mesh to sync, share and access, install live mesh software in all the devices you want to synchronize and choose folders you wish to sync. As you sign up with Windows Live Mesh you need to Live Mesh client on all the devices you join to the Mesh known as the Mesh Operating environment (MOE). Helpful features such as a Mesh bar and a Notifier keeps you updated with a continuous feed of information as to what is happening in the synchronized folder. Live Mesh simply awes you with cross-functionality features too whereby your live desktop can stay connected with your friend’s Mac too.

Syncplicity is the brainchild of Leonard Chung that bridges the world of online and offline effectively and safely with speed and simplicity and works on Windows platform. It takes utmost care of all your files. For example if one file accidentally gets deleted then it is not lost from the system, instead it is stored in the recycle bins of respective windows. Syncplicity helps integrate data across all multiple computers and integrates with Zoho, Google, Scribd and Picnik. Registration, installation and getting started with Syncplicity is very easy.

One can always start off with a free subscription of 2GB space and two computers and then upgrade to almost 50 GB for just $9.99 per month with syncplicity. Whereas in Live Mesh you have 5GB free storage space initially. This implies that you can create files and store on Microsoft’s servers that you simply can access from anywhere.

In syncplicity it is easier to add files in the sync folder than in the Live Mesh Syncing folders. However it is Syncplicity’s conflict resolution management system that eats up the available storage place as the original copy of the files are kept and additionally it creates other copies of the file (1 from each machine of the sync group). So in the process of synchronization, chewing up the remaining space happens and the message that you have exceeded your quota is flashed. It is here that Windows Live Mesh scores better as shadow copies of files is not kept in the file system and thus the additional storage place remains unhindered when conflict arises.

The future of cloud management storage is picking up and everywhere the buzz is all about cloud computing. Check out my next post on cloud computing too.

4G Technology will be widely used for internet access on computers as well as carrying cell phone communications...

4G Technology

Under the Mobile Technology domain G is said to be the Generation and it covers the major advances in the range of 20-30 years. 1G technology involved the first widely available mobile phones. 2G technology, which started in the early 1990s, switched to a digital format and introduced text messaging. 3G technology improved the efficiency of how data is carried, making it possible to carry enhanced information services such as websites in their original format. The latest iPhone is the best known example of 3G technology. Meanwhile, just to mention, that iPhone 4 is Not a 4G phone !

Currently 3G networks still send there data digitally over a single channel, OFDM is designed to send data over hundreds of parallel streams, thus increasing the amount of information that can be sent at a time over traditional CDMA networks.

4G mobile is not yet established as an agreed set of standards, so its features are currently simply goals rather than requirements. As well as drastically increasing data transfer speeds, 4G mobile should use enhanced security measures. Another goal is to reduce blips in transmission when a device moves between areas covered by different networks. 4G mobile networks should also use a network based on the IP address system used for the internet.

Within the United States, there are two major systems offering 4G mobile technology. One is known as WiMax and is backed by Clearwire, a firm whose majority owner is Sprint Nextel. It began testing services in Baltimore in 2008 and was set to expand this into major new markets in 2009. Sprint intended to have 80 cities covered by the end of 2010.

The rival system, Long Term Evolution or LTE, is backed mainly by Verizon. It was expected to be ready for testing in 2010 but not available for widespread use until 2012. LTE’s backers hoped to overcome this disadvantage by offering faster speeds and producing cheaper equipment.

Unlike previous generations of mobile technology, 4G mobile will be widely used for internet access on computers as well as carrying cell phone communications. Customers in areas which have strong 4G coverage will be able to use it for a home broadband connection which doesn’t require any cabling to their household. It can also be used for accessing the internet on the move without having to be in a wireless hotspot such as those offered by some coffee shops, airports and libraries.

The 4G technology will be able to support Interactive services like Video Conferencing (with more than 2 sites simultaneously), Wireless Internet, etc. The bandwidth would be much wider (100 MHz) and data would be transferred at much higher rates. The cost of the data transfer would be comparatively very less and global mobility would be possible. The networks will be all IP networks based on IPv6. The antennas will be much smarter and improved access technologies like OFDM and MC-CDMA (Multi Carrier CDMA) will be used. Also the security features will be much better.

The WiMax lobby and the people who are working with the WiMax technology are trying to push WiMax as the 4G wireless technology. At present there is no consensus among people to refer to this as the 4G wireless technology. WiMax can deliver upto 70 Mbps over a 50Km radius. As mentioned above, with 4G wireless technology people would like to acheive upto 1Gbps (indoors). WiMax does not satisfy the criteria completely. Also WiMax technology (802.16d) does not support mobility very well. To overcome the mobility problem, 802.16e or Mobile WiMax is being standardised. The important thing to remember here is that all the researches for 4G technology is based around OFDM (Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing). WiMax is also based on OFDM. This gives more credibility to the WiMax lobby who would like to term WiMax as a 4G technology. Since there is no consensus for the time being, we have to wait and see who would be the winner.

Agile Methodology

Nowadays we hear much about Agile Methodologies, especially in the context when we want to jumpstart any development quickly without the documentation part and where requirements are not very clear at the beginning.

To put it in simple words, this methodology is another style of software development that has been characterized by quick start on development, less documentation, change driven and iterative.

In other words, Agile software development is a conceptual framework for undertaking software development projects that can get developed fast without the strict classic guidelines of maintaining the entire life-cycle of the project.

All Agile methodologies generally engage in an iterative workflow and follow an incremental way to deliver software in short time-boxed situations. An iteration could be a small release of software or results being achieved at short intervals. Naturally in these time-boxed development situations, things like coding, design and testing will run in parallel and Iterations are typically a fixed length and this length will depend on the chosen methods under Agile. Each iteration can be referred as a cycle in this context of Agile Methodologies.

There are a number of agile software development methods, most of them give the same time-boxed iterations approach, which could typically last one to four weeks but again depends on the nature of the project. Each iteration is like a miniature software project of its own, and includes all of the tasks necessary to release the mini-increment of new functionality: planning, requirements analysis, design, coding, testing, and documentation.

The most popular Agile methodologies in use today appear to be Extreme Programming (XP), Scrum, Feature Driven Development (FDD), Lean Software Development, Agile Unified Process (Agile UP or AUP), Crystal, and Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM).

Some of the principles behind the Agile are:

Customer satisfaction by rapid, continuous delivery of useful software

Working software is delivered frequently (weeks rather than months)

Working software is the principal measure of progress

Even late changes in requirements are welcomed

Close, daily, cooperation between business people and developers

Face-to-face conversation is the best form of communication

Projects are built around motivated individuals, who should be trusted

Continuous attention to technical excellence and good design

Simplicity

Self-organizing teams

Regular adaptation to changing circumstances

Agile home ground:

Low criticality

Senior developers

Requirements change very often

Small number of developers

Culture that thrives on chaos

Criticisms include:

lack of structure and necessary documentation

only works with senior-level developers

incorporates insufficient software design

requires too much cultural change to adopt

can lead to more difficult contractual negotiations

Agile methods are sometimes characterized as being at the opposite end of the spectrum from “plan-driven” or “disciplined” methods. This distinction is misleading, as it implies that agile methods are “unplanned” or “undisciplined”. A more accurate distinction is that methods exist on a continuum from “adaptive” to “predictive”. Agile methods lie on the “adaptive” side of this continuum.

Some mistakenly believe that Agile methods avoid planning. This is a misconception, as Agile methods pay considerable attention to planning. However, Agile methods apply a planning process that is adaptive so as to accommodate inevitable change. Traditional, non-Agile methods tend to apply predictive planning that resists change and suffers the consequence of conflict between static plans and dynamic reality. Agile development has been widely documented as applicable to small, co-located development teams. Agile methods are more suitable when requirements are emergent and rapidly changing; they are less suitable for systems that have high criticality, reliability and safety requirements, though there is no complete consensus on this point.

Signal Problem with iPhone 4

First the major event, Apple launching the much awaited iPhone 4 in month of June and then the more dramatic event of the Antenna Signal Problem identified with iPhone 4. Though the problem is not reported against all iPhone 4 sets but We have been hearing a lot about it… lets dig the story to understand better.

Apple accepts the problem as below in their Apple UK site :

“Understanding attenuation and signal loss.

The opposite of amplification, attenuation happens whenever a signal is obstructed. All antennas — including television, radio, GPS and mobile phone antennas — can experience attenuation. And with most antennas, the density and composition of the human hand can cause attenuation to a greater degree than some other materials. On a mobile phone, signal loss typically occurs when your hand attenuates the most sensitive part of the antenna. In the photos and videos below, we demonstrate how different grips cause attenuation on many popular smartphones — including iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.1“

Now in US, in the wake of Consumer Reports announcing that it would not be recommending the iPhone 4 due to the much-discussed antenna problems, there have been calls for Apple to recall the device.

The obvious question comes, whether Apple is planning to issue a full recall of the iPhone 4 ?

No. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the company will not do an official recall. That would be expensive and unnecessary. So whats the other solution? While a recall could be damaging to Apple’s reputation, it would also be a costly endeavor, according to some calculations made by Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. In a research note on Tuesday, Sacconaghi estimated that while “a full product recall of the iPhone 4 (is) highly unlikely,” it would cost Apple $1.5 billion, or 3.5 percent of its total cash on hand.

iPhone 4G

There is so much buzz and rumours on the next iPhone, i.e. iPhone 4G which people say is slated to get launched in June/July 2010 but we are yet to hear confirmed news on that.

Still with clue of the recently found iPhone in a train, the speculation and analysis of the new set has already created buzz amongst the Apple enthusiasts globally.

We will wait again when Steve Jobs launch it sometime in mid 2010. With the available info around the web, the below could be the feature highlights coming in iPhone 4G, check this with the courtesy of Gizmodo:

What’s new in iPhone 4g

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

Watch this iPhone 4g Video

Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that aims at making machines or software programs that exhibit intelligent behavior like human beings.

Artificial Intelligence in a nutshell

Ever tried the voice recognition feature in your mobile or computer? Most of us have!! And I am sure most of you were amused to see how a machine could recognize the language we speak. All this is possible due to Artificial Intelligence and this is a small speck of the enormous potential AI and its application hold with in.

Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that aims at making machines or software programs that exhibit intelligent behavior like human beings i.e. a machine can perceive their surroundings, analyze and react in the best possible way. The AI involves various other fields like Cognitive Science, Mathematical Logic, computational science to name a few.

The history of artificial intelligence can be traced to 1950 when Alan Turing proposed the Turing test as a measure of machine intelligence. The Turing test Prof. John McCarthy coined the term Artificial Intelligence at the conference on the campus of Dartmouth College in summer of 1956.Over the time AI has been divided into:

Strong AI : Strong AI (Very often called as ‘true AI’) refers to AI that inculcates intelligence in the machine that matches or exceeds human intelligence. This has still not come in to existence but finds a place in many of the sci-fi movies like Matrix, Terminator etc.

Weak AI : Weak AI refers to AI that enables machines to only mimic humans based on their programming. This kind of AI just simulates the human thoughts and actions that they are programmed to. AI. The true AI features like independent reasoning, to learn freely and adapt are absent. All current form of AI is weak.

There are many areas in which weak AI already inhabits today’s world and in many cases we don’t even realize that we use Artificial Intelligence. Lets see some of such applications:

The self-parking technology in cars is based on AI.

AI is used in monitoring frauds in Banks.

The voice recognition in mobile phones was made possible using AI.

The intelligent homes comprising of temperature, passive infrared, electricity and light sensors are AI based.

Unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous submersibles, unmanned surveillance in shallow water used in Military also involve AI.

The Computer chess built on AI defeated the world Champion Garry Kasparov in a game.

The dream of making machines that are ‘Truly AI’ does not seem impossible. Companies like Google are aiming at making search engine fully artificially intelligent. In future we will have a search engine that will not be based on ‘just the words we type in without the search engine understanding the meaning’, instead it will exactly understand what we want.
