When brains at Microsoft Research Labs are at work, we can  definitely expect some path breaking techno developments. Techfest 2010 at Redmond witnessed many such demos on various projects. Lets have a look at some of them:

1. The Translating phone and The Transcriptor: Transcriptor generates a live transcript of the coversation we have over a call on a PC based communicator. The scripts are merged in email as well for searching.

The Translator is a wonderful concept that takes away the about the difference of language we might have over an important client call or anything like that. The translator translates the speech of the person on the other side of the phone to the language you want at real time. This 2-way translator also generates a live translated transcript. 2. Project Gustav: Project Gustav is a creative endeavor of Microsoft to make digital painting a perfect realistic experience. It is a realistic painting system prototype that simulates natural, real-world painting environment.

4. Mobile Surface: It aims at making any surface around you as a touch interface surface by linking together a mobile device, camera and a projector. It allows you to project an image on any surface and interact with it even without touching the image.

Direct messages (DM) are like private tweets that can be sent to one Twitter user at a time and also only to those users who are following you. It is quite similar to sending emails. Once a direct message is sent, it will not be available for public viewing, the tweet pops up in the Tweet user inbox. The sender can see that in the sent items.

However, the bigggest limitation of sending DMs through twitter is that tweets are restricted to only single user. Additionally, Twitter does not allow to send direct messages to people who don’t follow you.

Facebook goes on diet with its new version, the Facebook Lite. It is a simpler, lighter, cleaner, crispier and faster Facebook. This step by Facebook,  is seen as a milestone to take a leading edge in the sphere of real-time streaming web. The beta version is launched for specific regions like US and India, where the traffic of people joining this social networking site is heavy.

 Why Facebook Lite ?

• The main focus of the Lite version is writing on walls, sending messages, viewing and posting photos and videos, the crux of a social networking site.
• Facebook classic imbibes a whole set of versatile third-party applications making it richer and heavier whereas we find most of these applications missing in Lite, making it easier to load in a slower internet connection.
• Newer version is specifically targeted for the new users who might find the older version overwhelming with too much of information on a single page.

The changes in Facebook lite:

• The navigation and info buttons on the left of the page, highlights on the right is missing.
• There is no requests other than suggested friends and the friends request.
• The friends tab on the facebook tab is replaced by events tab that is meant for seeing and creating events.
• Another add-on is ‘View Top Stories’ instead of viewing all the post listed in order.
• Updates appear real-time along the bottom of the page, this is something worth experiencing.
• As mentioned earlier, most of the third-party applications are taken away and there is no tool bar and chat available in bottom as well.

This is considered as twitter-like site with no word count limit in posting a message and in comment. Also, a normal facebook page has a size of 778 KB while a page of facebook Lite weighs only 113 KB. Though this depends on the photos and videos a profile has.

A lot of users who enjoyed the various games and quizzes coupled with Facebook Classic might not be very enthusiastic about it.

Want to watch a 3D movie? The first thought that comes in mind is to go to a 3D theatre. This is soon going to be a history. Come 2010 and we will see 3D televisions making its way in many of our households.  As we see, IFA 2009 in Berlin conclude on 9-Sept-09, it brought with it, the promise of a new beginning in the home entertainment in the form of 3DTV.  Big players like Sony and Panasonic have declared that most likely by next year end they will launch 3D television. 

Yoshiiku Miyata, Vice President, Panasonic declared that Panasonic will take the lead in launching the first 3D TV in market using a technology called HD frame sequential. This technology uses two image views in frame sequence managed by active shutters. 

Sony’s plan to launch 3D TV by 2010 was announced by their CEO Sir Howard Stringer and as speculated Sony might opt for “active shutter” technology with electronic glasses that have tiny shutters that flicker in accord with the on-screen image to produce 3D effect. 

An Interesting point worth noting is that the first 3D channel will be broadcasted by sky. 

But there exists a few debatable issues like one should wear glasses with polarised lenses or use the glasses that are based on active shutter technologies? Will it actually be feasible to where a glass at home every time you want to see something on TV? Has the market matured enough to accept it as a household commodity? 

With so many ifs and buts around, it will be worth keeping an eye on to see how does 3D TV become a part of our day to day life.

Getting lost, forgetting the roadmap to our destination will be more of fun than a cause of anguish, kudos to Maptor, a trendy pocket device which integrates a map and a projector that projects a desired map (map of the current location you are in) on a solid surface like wall, floor, palm or any flat surface. etc and smartly indicates your current location with a red arrow, with the help of GPS, already installed in it. GPS automatically downloads the appropriate map. 

This is conceptualised and designed by Jinsun Park and Seonkeun Park of Samsung Art & Design Institute, South Korea. 

It is made of a biodegradable plastic PLA(Polylactic acid) with a touchpad button to perform basic operations like zoom in and zoom out. There is a heat discharging hole that puts away the heat generated by the in-built projector while projecting the map. It is also accompanied with Bluetooth facility for transferring maps in to the device.   

Two major concerns about its performance is the readability of map in day light and the batter life. 

It is already in news for good reasons. Maptor backed a silver award at International Design excellence award, 2009 organized by Industrial Designer Society of America (IDSA). 

This device, being a smart way to get rid of the discomfort of folding and unfolding a paper map and forgetting directions, is definitely going to create waves in market.
